Why Did Buddhism Decline in Asia?

Many Koreans identified Christianity with Korean nationalism in opposition to the Buddhism and Shinto of the colonial Japanese regime. Post-war Korean governments went out of their way to root out native Korean shamanistic beliefs, often literally destroying shrines. With Buddhism already sidelined by the Joseon Dynasty, Christianity filled the void. Christians — especially Protestants — are “widely perceived in the south [Korea] as representatives of a faith both powerful and modern, if not synonymous with America as the leader of human progress….” Christianity enjoyed rapid growth in South Korea: today, it is the largest religion there, at 31 percent of the population.
